How High Should a Shower Stool or Shower Bench Be?

Height adjustment is one of the most important setup steps for a shower seat. This guide explains how to judge a practical starting height.
How High Should a Shower Stool or Shower Bench Be?

Quick Answer

A shower seat should normally allow the user to sit with feet supported, hips and knees in a comfortable position and enough height to stand without excessive effort. Too low increases the effort needed to rise, while too high can leave the feet unsupported or make transfers less stable.

Why does seat height matter?

Seat height changes how much the hips and knees bend and how much effort is needed to stand.

What is a useful starting position?

When seated, both feet should rest securely on the floor and the knees should be in a comfortable position rather than sharply higher than the hips.

What happens if the seat is too low?

The user may need more leg strength and forward movement to stand, which can increase effort and instability.

What happens if the seat is too high?

The feet may not contact the floor properly, reducing stability. The user may also feel as though they are perched on the edge.

Should all legs be set to the same height?

Yes, unless the manufacturer specifically provides another setup method. Uneven legs can make the seat unstable.

What about sloping shower floors?

Check that all feet remain fully in contact with the surface. A steep or irregular slope can make some portable seats unsuitable.

How should you test the setup?

  1. set the seat on a clean, level part of the shower floor;
  2. check all feet contact the surface;
  3. sit with supervision if needed;
  4. confirm both feet are supported;
  5. stand and sit again without rushing;
  6. recheck stability before regular use.

Important: Do not raise the seat purely to make standing easier if this leaves the feet unsupported. A different aid may be needed.

When Should You Seek Professional Advice?

If the user needs hands-on help to sit or stand, has significant weakness or poor balance, or cannot place both feet securely on the floor, a clinician should assess the transfer and equipment choice.
