How to Choose the Right Knee Brace

How to Choose the Right Knee Brace

Choosing a knee brace can be confusing because different products are designed for different levels of support. Some are lightweight sleeves for everyday comfort, while others are more structured braces for instability, arthritis, ligament injuries or post-injury recovery.

This guide explains the main types of knee braces and how to choose a suitable level of support. It is designed to help you narrow down your options before shopping our knee brace range.

What level of knee support do you need?

A good starting point is to think about how much support you need. If your knee only needs light compression during everyday activity, a simple sleeve may be enough. If your knee feels unstable, gives way, or needs controlled movement after injury, a more structured brace may be more suitable.

Support level Best suited for Common product types
Mild Everyday comfort, light compression and general knee support. Knee sleeves and elastic knee supports.
Moderate More noticeable support for knee pain, light instability or activity. Knee supports with stays, patella supports and wraparound supports.
Firm Stronger support for instability, ligament strain or knees that feel weak. Hinged knee braces and functional knee braces.
Maximum High-level support, controlled movement, arthritis support or post-injury recovery. ROM braces, OA braces, immobilisers and specialist functional braces.

Common types of knee braces

Knee sleeves

Knee sleeves provide light compression and are commonly used for everyday knee pain, mild discomfort or general support during activity.

Knee supports with stays

Supports with stays include flexible side reinforcements. They offer more stability than a basic sleeve while still feeling relatively lightweight.

Patella straps and stabilisers

Patella products are designed to support the kneecap area. They may be useful when kneecap tracking, patella pain or sport-related discomfort is a concern.

Hinged knee braces

Hinged braces use side hinges to provide stronger support. They are often chosen for knee instability, ligament injuries or when more side-to-side control is needed.

OA / arthritis braces

Osteoarthritis knee braces are designed to support the joint and may help reduce pressure on one side of the knee, depending on the brace style.

ROM and post-op braces

Range of motion braces allow movement to be limited or controlled. These are commonly used during rehabilitation or after injury, usually under clinical guidance.

Choosing by condition or use

Everyday knee pain

For general aches, mild discomfort or day-to-day support, start with a knee sleeve or a moderate support with stays. These products are usually less bulky and easier to wear under clothing.

Knee instability

If the knee feels weak, unstable or prone to giving way, a hinged knee brace or functional brace may provide a higher level of support than a simple sleeve.

Arthritis or osteoarthritis

For arthritis-related knee pain, some customers choose supportive sleeves for comfort, while others may need an OA brace designed to help manage joint loading. Seek clinical advice if you are unsure which type is appropriate.

Patella tracking or kneecap pain

Patella straps and stabilisers are designed around the kneecap area and may be more suitable than a standard sleeve when the main issue is patella tracking or kneecap discomfort.

Ligament injuries

Ligament injuries often require more structured support. Hinged and functional braces are commonly used where extra stability is needed, but the right choice depends on the injury and stage of recovery.

Post-op recovery

After surgery or a significant injury, you may need a brace that controls or restricts movement. ROM braces and knee immobilisers should usually be selected with guidance from a healthcare professional.

When to seek professional advice

You should seek advice from a healthcare professional if your knee pain is severe, worsening, linked to a recent injury, or if you have swelling, locking, giving way, numbness or difficulty weight-bearing.

If you are unsure which support level is right for you, our Orthotix team can help guide you towards suitable product options.
