What is a toe loop support?
A toe loop is a soft fabric strap designed to connect or support adjacent toes while providing more cushioning than simple adhesive tape.
How can it support an injured toe?
For selected minor injuries, gently holding the affected toe beside a neighbouring toe can limit unwanted movement and provide reassurance during walking.
This is similar in principle to buddy strapping.
Can it be used for a broken toe?
Some uncomplicated lesser-toe fractures are managed with buddy support, but not every fracture is suitable for self-management.
The toe should not be forced into a position that causes pain or obvious distortion.
What about hammer or misaligned toes?
A loop can sometimes help keep a flexible toe in a more comfortable position or reduce rubbing between adjacent toes.
It does not permanently straighten a fixed deformity.
How tight should it be?
It should provide gentle support without constricting circulation. The toes should remain warm, normally coloured and comfortable.
Should padding be used between the toes?
Where skin rubs directly, a small amount of soft padding may help. The final setup should not make the shoe too tight.
What footwear is suitable?
Choose a wide, stable shoe with enough toe-box space. Narrow or pointed footwear can increase pressure over an injured or misaligned toe.
When should support be stopped?
Remove the loop if pain increases, the toes become numb or discoloured, swelling worsens or the strap creates a skin problem.
Important: A visibly deformed or displaced toe should not be pulled straight with a loop. Significant injuries need clinical assessment.
