What do you need?
Use a flexible fabric or dressmaking tape. If one is unavailable, a non-stretch cord can be used and then measured against a ruler.
Where should the tape sit?
Place it around the widest part of the head, usually slightly above the eyebrows, above the ears and around the fullest part at the back.
Should the tape be tight?
No. It should be snug enough to follow the head shape without compressing the skin.
Why must the tape stay level?
If it slopes sharply up or down at the back, the measured circumference can be inaccurate.
Should you measure more than once?
Yes. Repeat the measurement two or three times and use a consistent result.
What about thick hair?
Measure with the hairstyle normally worn under the headgear. Large changes in hair volume can alter fit.
What if the wearer is between sizes?
Follow the instructions for that specific product. Some manufacturers advise sizing up, while others rely on adjustable rear sections or straps.
Is circumference the only thing that matters?
No. Head depth and shape influence how low a product sits. Two people with the same circumference may need different models.
How do you check after choosing the size?
- place the headwear level on the head;
- check the intended areas are covered;
- confirm it does not rock or slide;
- adjust the retention system;
- inspect for pressure after a short period of wear.
Important: Always use the current size chart for the exact product. Do not assume that the same named size is identical across different brands or models.
