What is an arch sleeve?
An arch sleeve is a stretchable band worn around the midfoot. A gel section sits beneath the arch to create local cushioning and support.
How does it differ from an insole?
A full insole sits beneath most or all of the foot and can incorporate heel, arch and forefoot features.
An arch sleeve targets only the midfoot and moves with the foot rather than sitting on the shoe base.
How much support does it provide?
It generally provides mild local support and cushioning rather than strong structural control.
It should not be assumed to have the same mechanical effect as a firm contoured orthotic.
Can it be worn without shoes?
Many sleeves can be worn with socks or around the home, although their stability and comfort depend on the product and activity.
Can it fit inside shoes?
Yes, if the shoe has enough midfoot width and depth. The band should not make the footwear tight across the instep.
How should the gel pad sit?
The pad should be centred beneath the arch rather than sitting too far towards the heel or forefoot.
The sleeve should remain flat and should not twist.
Can it help plantar heel symptoms?
Arch support and cushioning may be useful as part of a broader approach for selected plantar heel symptoms, but the underlying cause and footwear still matter.
When might a full orthotic be more suitable?
A structured insole may be more appropriate where heel control, rearfoot posting, forefoot support or a specific biomechanical prescription is required.
Important: A sleeve that feels tight enough to cause numbness, colour change or marked pressure should be removed.
