Where does a toe crest sit?
The pad sits beneath the lesser toes rather than between them. A loop usually passes around one toe to help keep the crest in position.
What does the crest do?
It fills some of the gap beneath curled toes and provides a soft contact surface for the underside of the digits.
This can reduce concentrated pressure at the tips of the toes or beneath the forefoot.
What toe shapes may benefit?
Toe crests are commonly used for flexible hammer, claw or mallet toe patterns where the toes curl and the tips or joints rub against footwear.
Does a toe crest straighten the toe?
It may support the toe in a more comfortable position while worn, particularly if the deformity remains flexible.
It does not permanently correct the underlying structural change.
How tight should the toe loop be?
The loop should hold the pad in position without constricting the toe. The toe should remain warm and its normal colour should be maintained.
Where should the pad sit?
The main gel section should sit beneath the affected toes and should not roll into a narrow ridge.
If it migrates forwards or backwards, the size or shoe fit may need changing.
Can it be worn in shoes?
Yes, provided there is enough forefoot width and depth. A crowded toe box can cancel out the benefit by increasing pressure over the tops or sides of the toes.
What should you check after use?
- no new rubbing from the loop;
- no persistent red mark beneath the pad;
- the toes are not more crowded;
- the crest stays in position;
- the shoe still fits securely.
Important: If the toe is rigid, very painful or associated with an open sore, do not rely on cushioning alone. Professional assessment is appropriate.
