What should you check first?
Work out whether only the external surface was splashed or whether water has reached the padding or dressing underneath.
Can you use a hairdryer?
Avoid strong or hot airflow unless the treating team has specifically advised a safe method. Heat can injure skin and may affect cast materials.
Can you push a towel under the cast?
No. This can bunch the padding, damage the skin and alter pressure inside the cast.
What if the cast feels soft?
A softened or weakened cast may no longer provide the intended support and should be assessed.
What if there is a dressing underneath?
A wet wound dressing may need changing, particularly after surgery or where infection risk is a concern.
What warning signs should prompt review?
- persistent dampness;
- new odour;
- increasing pain or burning;
- discharge at an edge;
- cast cracking or softening;
- new swelling or numbness.
How can future wetting be reduced?
Use a correctly sized waterproof cover for showering and check the seal before each use.
