For carpal tunnel symptoms, the most useful wrist brace is generally one that can keep the wrist close to a straight or neutral position, particularly during sleep.
A simple sleeve, a wrist splint with a stay and a wrist-and-thumb brace all provide different types of support, so choosing the most substantial product is not automatically better.
What features should you look for?
Wrist stay
A supportive stay can reduce unwanted wrist bending during sleep.
Neutral position
The brace should support the wrist without forcing it into an uncomfortable angle.
Adjustable fastening
Straps allow the fit to be secure without excessive compression.
Free fingers and thumb
For isolated carpal tunnel symptoms, extra thumb immobilisation is usually unnecessary.
Is a palm-side stay useful?
Many carpal tunnel wrist splints use a metal or plastic stay on the palm side. This helps limit flexion and maintain a more neutral position.
Should the brace be rigid?
It should be structured enough to control wrist position, but it does not need to immobilise the whole hand.
What about a soft compression sleeve?
A sleeve may feel comfortable, but if it allows the wrist to bend freely it may not provide the neutral positioning that is usually the aim of carpal tunnel splinting.
Do you need thumb support?
Not usually for carpal tunnel syndrome alone. A wrist-and-thumb brace is more relevant where a separate thumb condition also needs support.
| Support type | Typical relevance to CTS |
|---|---|
| Soft wrist sleeve | Comfort/compression but limited positioning control |
| Wrist brace with stay | Usually most relevant for neutral night positioning |
| Wrist & thumb brace | Useful if a separate thumb problem also needs immobilisation |
| Heavy rigid wrist brace | May provide more restriction than routine CTS splinting requires |
Do not keep moving to stronger braces if symptoms are worsening. Persistent numbness, weakness or loss of grip should be assessed.
