What does a waterproof cast cover do?
It creates a temporary water-resistant barrier around a cast, dressing or bandage so that the protected area can remain dry during activities such as showering.
How does it seal?
Most reusable covers use a flexible opening that stretches around the limb above the cast or dressing. The seal needs to sit against healthy skin rather than over the cast itself.
What can it be used over?
Depending on size and shape, a cast cover may be used over plaster or synthetic casts, dressings and some splints where the clinician has advised that the area must remain dry.
Is it only for fractures?
No. Similar covers may also be useful after surgery or wound treatment where a dressing must be protected from water.
Can it be used instead of following cast-care instructions?
No. It is an accessory for protecting the area from water. The original restrictions and care plan still apply.
How do you choose arm or leg protection?
Use a cover designed for the correct limb and long enough to extend beyond the cast or dressing onto healthy skin.
What about children?
Paediatric sizes are designed around smaller limb dimensions. Correct fit matters because an adult cover may not seal securely on a child.
Important: A waterproof cover reduces the chance of water reaching the cast or dressing, but no reusable seal should be treated as completely fail-safe. Check the protected area after use.
