What external rotation means
External rotation describes the upper arm turning outward at the shoulder. A specialist sling uses a cushion, frame or strap arrangement to hold the forearm so that the shoulder remains in a controlled degree of outward rotation.
How it differs from a standard sling
A standard sling usually carries the forearm across the front of the body. An external rotation design changes the relationship between the upper arm and torso. It should not be confused with an ordinary abduction cushion, although some products combine positioning features.
Why it may be used
A shoulder specialist may choose this position after a particular injury or procedure. Evidence and protocols vary by condition, and not every person with a dislocation or operation needs external rotation. The correct angle and duration therefore belong in the individual treatment plan.
Fitting and safety
The elbow must sit correctly, the forearm and wrist should be supported, and the positional component must remain where the fitter placed it. Straps should not impair breathing or circulation. Check the hand for swelling, colour, temperature and sensation, and inspect pressure areas each day.
Do not modify the position yourself
Do not remove the positioning component, reverse the sling, alter the angle or substitute a standard sling without approval. If the product feels impossible to tolerate or no longer holds the prescribed position, contact the fracture clinic, surgical team, physiotherapist or orthotist.
